I'm not sure why unless it is the MB/processor and the limited ram. The WD WorldEdition is the absolute _slowest_ NAS I have ever seen, despite having GB ethernet.

Then I can get a second 1TB sATA and run software RAID1 in the MacPro, and use the Debian servers for backup. I think as an alternative I might pull the 1TB sATA out of my Western Digital MyBook WorldEdition NAS (version 1, the one with one 1TB drive instead of 2 x 500GB).

I've been running software RAID5 on my two Debian servers for some time now I was going to cannibalize the drives on one and install them into the MacPro. I realized after posting that OS X does not support software RAID5. I guess you'd get one extra drives worth of space out of it, but if you really need extra space it's likely time to go to something external (of which there are also lots of solutions). I don't think there is much point in going beyond RAID 10 for a four drive configuration though. I personally have used software RAID 1 in my machine for a long time, and it works very well. If you are a developer you can mess with beta read/write for ZFS, with RAID-Z and RAID-Z2 doing single and double parity respectively, but obviously it would not be a good idea to entrust data to those right now. Compare to the Areca ARC-1680x for example, which is actually less money (I think most of the Areca cards are).ДЄs far as software goes, no OS X does not support anything except for RAID 0/1 in the default OS. I don't think Apple's card is utterly without value in all situations, since it is possible there'd be a place that would desperately need that one extra drives worth of space and wouldn't mind spending $1k.

There are a number of actual good, very fast RAID cards available for a Mac Pro, the better ones support RAID 6 too. Please don't point anyone towards that horrible Apple RAID card. ^^^ which is now available for the Mac Pro, but it's a tad pricey. I have not used software raid under OS X, so I wondered if anyone has any experience and if it is similarly easy to rebuild a RAID array after a drive failure (RAID5), and if so, how one actually goes about doing so. In both cases, rebuilding the array (in the case of the failed drive, after installing a replacement) worked perfectly with minimal effort or fuss. This has happened to me twice in the past year, once when a drive simply failed, and once when a blackout occurred during a winter storm and I did not get to the system to shut it down properly before the USP battery died, leading to data corruption. Up to now, I have used RAID-5 under Linux, and in the rare occasion were a drive has become corrupted or failed, it was been trivially easy to replace the drive and rebuild the array using the mdadm command. I have a number of sATA drives handy, and was thinking of adding three of them and using them in a RAID-5 configuration for data storage. I am looking to get a MacPro as soon as the highly predicted and anticipated refresh occurs.
